Description of Service

Organisation
Staff: 12 Physicians practising within General Medicine. A number also practice within a subspecialty. General Medicine unit also comprises Clinical Pharmacology and Acute Peri-operative service. Very close association with Infectious Diseases as well.
Units: 3 units plus 20 bed MAPU unit
IM Demographics
I.M. Beds: 60 beds normally
I.M. Inpatient Activity: Varies but up to 90 beds during peak activity
I.M. Outpatient Clinics: 2 clinical per week
I.M. Specialty Interests / Special Units: Peri-operative medicine, Clinical Pharmacology, Infectious Diseases

Formal Training

Lectures: Physican Education Program
Journal Club: Statewide journal club for advanced trainees in General Medicine
Grand Rounds: Weekly grand rounds and weekly unit clinical meeting
Consult Rounds: Twice weekly plus dailypost take rounds
Specialty Rotations: Available in Intensive Care, Stoke Medicine, Cardiology and Infectious Diseases
Research: Projects encouraged, clinical research opportunities available. The unit has a lead clinician who is responsible for the co-ordination of research activity within the unit
Quality Improvement: Registrars are required to complete a QI project during the year

Trainee Responsibilities in I.M.

Coverage Roster: One evening per week and one day of weekend on 1 in 6 roster
Workload in Medicine Units: Workload is moderately high - we admit all undifferentated patients to Gen Med. Good relationship with emergency and sub specialty units. Shared bed ward with cardiology
Teaching Responsibilities Undergraduate teaching on weekly basis, post graduate FRACP trainees on a regular basis under direction of DPT
Research/presentations: Encouraged and supported through this process
