300 bed teaching hospital incorporating the University of Tasmania’s northern clinical school in a town including the University of Tasmania’s northern campus and the Australian Maritime College in an excellent educational, cultural and recreational environment.

Description of Service

Organisation
Staff: 1 fulltime director, 4 staff specialists, 5 VMO consultants
Units: 3 general internal medicine units (IM) each of 3 consultants, a registrar, resident and intern
IM Demographics
IM Beds: 75 beds (78% of all Department of Medicine beds)
IM Inpatient Activity: 2500 separations per annum
IM Outpatient Clinics: 3000 attendances per annum
IM Specialty Interests / Special Units: Acute stroke unit, geriatric medicine, rehabilitation, rotation through subspecialty units as below.

Formal Training

Lectures: Periodic Specialist tutorials
Journal Club: Weekly
Grand Rounds: Weekly
Consult Rounds: 2 per week, daily informal contact, post-take rounds, daily morning report
Specialty Rotations: 3-6 month negotiable rotations in: renal medicine, cardiology, endocrinology, respiratory medicine, neurology, haematology/oncology, gastroenterology. Trainees participate in general medicine and relevant subspecialty outpatient clinics
Research: Participation in Quality Improvement, Evidence Based Medicine and health services research encouraged. Clifford Craig Medical Research Trust on site.
Quality Improvement: Regular Mortality and Morbidity meetings, combined morning meetings weekdays

Trainee Responsibilities in IM

Coverage Roster: 1 in 8 (or less frequent) evenings on call, no night roster. Some weekend cover.
Workload in Medicine Units: 2 formal ward rounds (multiple consultants) weekly, daily otherwise, 1 outpatient clinic
Teaching Responsibilities Junior medical staff, medical students, basic trainees
Research/presentations: 5 x clinical audits per year, ad hoc grand round presentations.
Multi-centre clinical trials.
