Description of Service

Organisation
Staff: 5 General Medicine Units and significant scope for rotations to other specialities
Units: Each year, the specialties we offer for advanced trainees in General Medicine are different. Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss options.
IM Demographics
IM Beds: 120
IM Inpatient Activity: 12 admissions weekdays, 8 weekend days. Inpatients per unit - approx 15
IM Outpatient Clinics: Weekly
IM Specialty Interests / Special Units: Respiratory, Endo, Renal, Geriatrics and Rheumatology

Formal Training

Lectures: Nil specific for advanced training in GM
Journal Club: Weekly
Grand Rounds: Weekly
Consult Rounds: Daily or as required
Specialty Rotations: Varies from year to year - we have had Geriatrics, Oncology, Renal Medicine, Infectious Diseases of recent times.
Research: Opportunities available for interested trainees.
Quality Improvement: A number of audit activities are on-going.

Trainee Responsibilities in IM

Coverage Roster: If working in General Internal Medicine - on in 10 first on-call if senior registrar, one in five if a junior registrar.
Workload in Medicine Units: 12 new admissions on on-take day, usual unit load 8-20 patients.
Teaching Responsibilities Undergraduate and Post-graduate (BPTs)
Research/presentations: Grand Round presentation. Research - as interested.

Facilities: Staff gym, video lectures, access to Professional Development funding.
Information Technology: Own desk with personal computer and access to projector/fax/scanning/copying/admin support in our office
