280 bed hospital, accredited as Level 2 Teaching Hospital with the Royal
Australasian College of Physicians.
The Department of Internal Medicine,
Toowoomba Hospital is the sole provider of public hospital specialist
level medical inpatient and outpatient services in the south-western Queensland
area - an area of approximately 410,000 km2 with a resident population
of
about 280,000.
The Department’s primary catchment area is the Darling
Downs region (92,000 km2, population 210,000). Queensland Health data indicate
that only 55% of bed days relate to residents of the Toowoomba Statistical
Local Area. The full service area extends well beyond this, extending east
to Laidley, north to Kingaroy, west beyond Charleville to the South Australia
and Northern Territory borders, and south into Northern New South Wales border
regions.
The City of Toowoomba, located on the eastern edge of the Darling
Downs, 120 km west of Brisbane. is the major populated centre in this
predominantly rural & remote
region.
