Description of Service

Organisation
Staff: 1 full-time director; 1 full-time specialist; 3 part-time specialists; 1 visiting medical officers
Units: 4 medical units of 10-12 beds each staffed by consultant, registrar and resident, In addition cover CCU, HDU, palliative care and renal units.
IM Demographics
IM Beds: 40 beds + 5 bed CCU + 2 bed HDU + 12 bed palliative care unit + 16 bed rehabilitation unit
IM Inpatient Activity: each registrar has variably 5-20 patients. Average 10-12
IM Outpatient Clinics: each registrar does 2 clinics per week
IM Specialty Interests / Special Units: Respiratory medicine
Acute Stroke Unit
Coronary care
Diabetic clinic
Viral liver / HIV clinic
Renal unit with dialysis
Rehabilitation medicine
Palliative care

Formal Training

Lectures: 3 times weekly
Journal Club: Weekly
Grand Rounds: Weekly
Consult Rounds: 2 per week; daily informal contact
Specialty Rotations: Negotiable. Opportunity to learn one or more of cardiac echo, bronchoscopy, gastroscopy, liver biopsy as well as the usual general medical procedures.
Research: Supported as desired
Quality Improvement: mortality and morbidity meetings; weekly case conferences;

Trainee Responsibilities in IM

Coverage Roster: 1 in 5 after hours evening roster (4.30-8.00pm); 12-hour week-end shifts 1 in 4-5; no night duty (usually)
Workload in Medicine Units: One 24-hour admission on-take per week with one in 4 week-end on-take
2 ward rounds and 2 OPD sessions per week
Teaching Responsibilities Junior staff/nursing/RMO/students
Research/presentations: Grand Rounds presentation every 6-8 weeks months +
Case presentation meeting every 6-8 weeks
