Description of Service

Organisation
Staff: 7 fulltime staff physicians, 1 senior lecturer(JCU), 8 VMO's
Units: General Medicine, Renal, Respiratory, Gastroenterology/Hepatology/Rheumatology, Endocrine/Diabetes, Cardiology, Haematology/Oncology/Palliative Care, Neurology/Rehab, Geriatrics
(all units do a component of general medicine)
IM Demographics
IM Beds: 88 (including 20 rehab/non-acute)
IM Inpatient Activity: ~ 7500 separations (excluding dialysis)
IM Outpatient Clinics: 43/week (includes outreach program)
IM Specialty Interests / Special Units: Outreach internal medicine program to Cape and Torres, equivalent of 1 fulltime physician and 1 registrar. Extensive exposure to Indigenous Health and some Tropical Medicine.
General medicine training is main educational focus of the Division with opportunities to receive procedural training in endoscopy and echocardiography.

Lectures: Weekly educational lecture for registrars, weekly meetings in Cardiology, Resp; monthly GE
Journal Club: monthly(with dinner)
Grand Rounds: Weekly
Consult Rounds: Daily
Specialty Rotations: All the above available
Research: Many opportunities
Quality Improvement: Error Med quality improvement course

Trainee Responsibilities in IM

Coverage Roster: Evenings 1:12 until 2230, Nights 2230-0830(1:11) for 1 week. Weekend days 1:12(0800-2230)
Workload in Medicine Units: Some variability between units. Av 10 inpatients, 2-3 outpatient sessions
Teaching Responsibilities Students from James Cook University med school
Research/presentations: Grand rounds ~2x/year
