Department has a position available for a Senior Advanced Trainee in Internal Medicine & Aged Care (see Positions Vacant). This position is ideally designed for a final year trainee. This position allows the trainee to obtain experience as a junior consultant with full consultant backup and supervision. It assists the trainee with the transistion from registrar to consultant.

Description of Service

Organisation
Staff: 1 Full time Director, 8 other full time staff specialists (who have other duties in addition), 11 part-time specialists
Units: Department of Internal Medicine & Aged Care contains 8 General Medicine Units, the Obstetric Medicine Unit and the Geriatric Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit - (In addition all areas of subspecialty medicine are available at RBWH)
IM Demographics
I.M. Beds: 90-130 - depends on demand
I.M. Inpatient Activity: Over 5,000 separations per year; 8 general medical units. Medical Assessment & Planning Unit
I.M. Outpatient Clinics: Over 20 clinics
I.M. Specialty Interests / Special Units: Clinical Pharmacology; Health Systems Research; Geriatrics Medicine; Obstetric Medicine; Rheumatology; Immunology, Medical Education, Chronic Disease Management, Heart Failure and Rehabilitation Medicine.
Other Clinics/Programs:
Acute medical assessment or planning unit: Yes
Multidisciplinary chronic disease management clinic or program: Yes
Multidisciplinary clinic or program that specifically targets patients at high risk of hospital admission (or readmission): No (coming soon)

Formal Training

Lectures: Extensive Medical Education program at RBWH - including Medical Grand Rounds; subspecialty lectures and tutorials; Multiprofessional Education Sessions are also organised throughout the year
Journal Club: Department weekly education session reviews important new information in internal medicine
Grand Rounds: Yes
Consult Rounds: Consultation services are provided by Internal Medicine to all other services at the hospital. Perioperative medicine experience is easily attained.
Specialty Rotations: Many subspecialty terms are available for General Advanced Trainees at RBWH. The Department of Internal Medicine & Aged Care actively negotiates with subspecialty departments to organise optimal programs for advanced trainees
Research: Research opportunities are encouraged. Department focuses on health systems research - which is run through the Internal Medicine Research Unit
Quality Improvement: Internal Medicine Research Unit also is involved in a number of quality improvement exercises. Trainees are encouraged to participate.

Trainee Responsibilities in I.M.

Coverage Roster: 1 in 8
Workload in Medicine Units: 10-25 inpatients; 1 to 2 clinics per week; consultation services
Teaching Responsibilities Medical Students - usually year 3; FRACP training for basic trainees
Research/presentations: Organised on a regular basis if trainee is involved in research projects
