Description of Service

Organisation
Staff: 7 participants in gen. med. roster. Also subspecialty attachments to most subspecialties
Units: 3 wards, and Geriatric unit. Total approx 100 beds. Comprehensive OPD service and investigative facilities appropriate for secondary service for population of 140,000. Also support for smaller provincial hospital for pop of approx 55,000 (Whakatane Hospital).

IM Inpatient Activity: 10000 pa (including Day Stay eg for endoscopy)
IM Outpatient Clinics: 18000 pa
IM Specialty Interests / Special Units: Acute stroke facility

Formal Training

Lectures: Regular, and departmental clinical meeting once per week.
Journal Club: Numerous per week
Grand Rounds: Weekly
Consult Rounds: Regular, mostly 2/wk/consultant.
Specialty Rotations: Negotiable all specialties esp neurology, cardiology
Research: Active programme. 4 nurse research staff
Quality Improvement: Monthly audit; M+M monthly
Regular business meetings, Nurse case managers for some areas, eg CCF, COPD, Antibiotics in the home, Chronic viral hepatitis

Trainee Responsibilities in IM

Coverage Roster: variable, approx 1:5. RMO regulations tightly control on call time.
Workload in Medicine Units: 15-20 patients
Teaching Responsibilities To RMO’s, nurses, trainee interns
Research/presentations: As appropriate/needed
