A 200-bed (Inpatient 178-beds with 22-day beds) district hospital, serving a local population of 65,000 and a rural population of 35,000. 35% of the population are indigenous New Zealand Maori.

Description of Service

Organisation
Staff: 6 full time specialists who rotate in turn on and off the ward supported by 7 Medical Registrars and 7 House Officers
Units: 2 Medical Units each with 16 and 20 beds each staffed by senior staff. Medical Units also includes a 4-bed CCU and ICU beds for medical patients, all managed by the medical staff.

Formal Training

Lectures: Weekly
Journal Club: Weekly
Grand Rounds: Weekly
Consult Rounds: 2 per Consultant per week and daily contact
Specialty Rotations: General Medicine with unselected general medical take and the teams responsible care for all patients with no subspecialty patients removed
Research: There are opportunities for audit and research projects
Quality Improvement: Monthly audit/morbidity meeting

Trainee Responsibilities in IM

Coverage Roster: 1 : 6 after hours nights
Workload in Medicine Units: Maximum of 2 x 16 hour days a week and rostered nights 1 : 6
Teaching Responsibilities Yes to Junior staff
Research/presentations: Registrars are expected to present Evidence Based Medicine topics on a regular basis in the teaching programme
