Description of Service

Organisation
Staff: 12 General Physicians with subspecialty interests share acute on call, 1 Neurologist & Rheumatologist
Units: 1 General Medical Unit including Acute Admitting Unit, CCU and Acute Stroke/Neurology Unit. All under department of General Medicine – no subspecialty acute admitting.
IM Demographics
IM Beds: 96
IM Inpatient Activity: 7000 discharges per year. There is no separate subspecialty acute admitting.
IM Outpatient Clinics: Multiple subspecialty & GM
IM Specialty Interests / Special Units: Cardiology – 3 specialists, CCU, Echo & Catheter Lab
Geriatric Med – 3 specialists & ATR unit
Respiratory – 2 specialists & full Resp Lab
Diabetes/Endo – 2 specialists
Infectious Disease, Neurology, Rheumatology & Gastro – 1 specialist each

Formal Training

Lectures: Weekly department educational session - registrar run. Weekly registrar tutorial - specialist run
Journal Club: Weekly – specialist run
Grand Rounds: 1 weekly, cross specialty
Consult Rounds: 3 x weekly & evening acute round
Specialty Rotations: 3-6 month rotations negotiable in general medicine runs with subspecialty experience in Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine (with bronchoscopy & respiratory lab experience), Gastroenterology (with scooping experience), Diabetes & Endocrinology and Infectious Diseases.
Trainees in general medical units also participate in OPD clinics in Neurology and on request in Rheumatology
Research: Active research department participating predominantly in cardiology & stroke trials
Quality Improvement: Monthly department audit session

Trainee Responsibilities in IM

Coverage Roster: 11 medical registrars share the 24 hour on call rota including 1 week of nights in 11. 9 registrars are attached to GM on call teams, 1 ED registrar run and 1 night relief.
Workload in Medicine Units: Average 21 admissions per day
3 x ward rounds per week & evening acute call round
1-2 OP clinics per week
Teaching Responsibilities Yes, to junior medical staff/nursing/students
Research/presentations: Dept of medicine presentation every 3 months

Library: Yes – both physical & on line; Electronic texts including BNF, Harrison’s & UpToDate
