400 bed University teaching hospital attached to the University of Otago Medical School. Very well serviced with specialty runs. Gateway to Otago skiing, tramping (bushwalking) and adventure sports

Description of Service

Organisation
Staff: 1 director, 8 full time consultants
Units: 4 medical teams with 2 consultants, 1 registrar, 1 house surgeon, trainee intern and 2 4th year medical students each.
IM Demographics
IM Beds: 46 beds
IM Inpatient Activity: 3,400 admissions per annum
IM Outpatient Clinics: Mainly inpatient duties. 1 outpatient clinic per month. Rotation to OP primarily in specialty rotations which are available
IM Specialty Interests / Special Units: We take most of the Acute Medicine admissions to this hospital that do not require procedures. Consultant special interests include Geriatrics, Rheumatology, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Palliative Care, Stroke Medicine, Rehabilitation and Infectious Diseases

Formal Training

Lectures: Basic trainees have 2 hours of formal lectures per week taught by specialists. Exam candidates have formal weekly practice clinical presentations attended by several consultants. Dunedin runs the 2 week written examination course and the 1 week clinical examination course, both for exam candidates
Journal Club: Weekly
Grand Rounds: Registrar presenting Grand Rounds weekly. Consultant presenting University Forums weekly. Also weekly Radiology session
Consult Rounds: Minimum 2 per week
Specialty Rotations: 3 month rotations for basic trainees. 3, 6 and 12 month rotations for advanced trainees. Rotations available:  Acute Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Cardiology, Oncology\Haematology, ICU, Respiratory Medicine, Rehabilitation, Renal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Neurology, Emergency Medicine (Basic trainees only) . Leave/Relief positions. All services except ED and ICU have outpatients at least weekly
Research: Affiliated with the University of Otago, offering frequent research activities.
Quality Improvement: Functional and accredited programme. Monthly morbidity meetings, monthly unit meetings, EBM focus to journal club and Grand Rounds

Trainee Responsibilities in IM

Coverage Roster: 1:8 call evenings (16:30 – 23:00) and weekends. One rostered weekend day per weekend. Night Duty: 7 nights over 14 days (4 on, 7 off, 3 on, 2 off). 2-3 night duties per year
Workload in Medicine Units: 1:4 acute intake. Evening and weekend call less frequent. One Clinic per month
Teaching Responsibilities Training of medical students and junior doctors, as well as participation in registrar training sessions.
Research/presentations: Presentations in Journal Club ~ 1:8 weeks, research question presentation ~1:8, 3-4 Grand Rounds per year. Advanced trainees clinical presentation ~3-4 times per year
