400 bed University teaching hospital attached to the University of Otago Medical School. Very well serviced with specialty runs. Gateway to Otago skiing, tramping (bushwalking) and adventure sports

Description of Service

Organisation
Staff: 1 director, 4 full time consultants, intended to increase.
Units: 4 medical teams with 1 consultant, registrar, house surgeon, trainee intern and 2-3 4th year students each.
IM Demographics
IM Beds: 42 beds
IM Inpatient Activity: 3400 admissions pa
IM Outpatient Clinics: Low priority as inpatient activity overtakes. Rotation to OP primarily in specialty rotations which are available
IM Specialty Interests / Special Units: We take most of the acute Medicine admissions to this hospital that do not require procedures. Consultant special interests include Geriatrics, Rheumatology, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Palliative Care, Stroke Medicine, Rehabilitation

Formal Training

Lectures: Approximately 4 hours of formal teaching per week. Otago runs the RACP Medicine Update sessions for pre exam trainees
Journal Club: Weekly, attended by at least three specialty consultants and all trainees.
Grand Rounds: Two weekly. Also weekly Radiology session
Consult Rounds: At least two per week, frequently more
Specialty Rotations: 6 month rotations in Acute Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Cardiology, Oncology\Haematology, ICU, Respiratory Medicine, Rehabilitation, (Leave/Relief positions), Renal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Neurology, Emergency Medicine - Basic trainees only.
All services except ED and ICU have outpatients at least weekly.
Research: Affiliated with the University of Otago, offering frequent research activities.
Quality Improvement: Functional and accredited programme. Monthly morbidity meetings, monthly unit meetings, EBM focus to journal club and Grand Rounds

Trainee Responsibilities in IM

Coverage Roster: 1 in 6 on call 430-1030, and about 1:12 weekends. Night Duty around 2 weeks per year.
Workload in Medicine Units: 1:4 acute intake, but evening call infrequent. One Clinic per week.
Teaching Responsibilities Training of medical students and junior doctors, as well as participation in registrar training sessions.
Research/presentations: Formal presentations in Journal Club and at least 4 Grand Rounds per year
