Tertiary hospital in capital city of Northern Territory. Gateway to Arnhem Land, Katherine Gorge, and Kakuda National Park.

Number of Training Positions: Up to 5 on General Medicial units, all other specialties happy to provide positions for ATs in IM, subject to negotiation

Description of Service

Organisation
Staff: 31 physicians, including 5 generalists, 27 registrars
Units: 5; each is general with a subspecialty interest. Endocrinology, Neurology, ID and Respiratory are attached to IM units. Cardiology, Renal, Haematology, Oncology and Palliative Care units are separate.
IM Demographics
IM Beds: 100-110 including 24 bed RAPU nit (12 IM, 12 surgical beds)
IM Inpatient Activity: 3500-4000 IM separations per year. Admisisns 6-16 per take.
IM Outpatient Clinics: One per IM unit registrar, per week
IM Specialty Interests / Special Units: Infectious diseases

Formal Training

- Lectures: Weekly early am Registrar training. Annual site subscriptionto PEP (Victoria)
Journal Club: Weekly IM. Other specialty JCs also available
Grand Rounds: Weekly
Consult Rounds: Yes, reviewed with consultants
Specialty Rotations: By negotiation with DPE. All Specialty units supportive of access to training positions for IM trainees
Research: Supported. Experienced clinician researchers on staff to advise. Strong links with Menzies School of Tropical Health Research
Quality Improvement: Yes - ATs encouraged to engage with Division of Medicine Quality Council

Trainee Responsibilities in IM

Coverage Roster: Admitting one day in 5, 0800-2200 hours shift that day. Approximately one 16 hour weekend day per month
Workload in Medicine Units: 15 to 30 inpatients per day per unit, average 22
Teaching Responsibilities Medical students, JMO’s
Research/presentations: Yes. Regular presentations at MGR. All ATs encouraged to present at RACP NT ASM. Annual RDH JMO/Registra Research Prize competition
