The Canberra Hospital (TCH) - no general medical unit exists but opportunities for training in general medicine can be negotiated.

Calvary Hospital - operates a general admitting roster and has a specific position for an advanced trainee in general medicine.

Description of Service

Organisation
Staff: Each subspecialty unit staffed with 1-2 registrars and 1-2RMOs dependent on inpatient load.
Units: All subspecialties covered at TCH, 2 general medical units at Calvary (3-4 consultants per unit).
Both hospitals have inpatient obstetric and psychiatric facilities with opportunities for liaison.
IM Demographics
IM Beds: No general medical beds at TCH, approximately 50 general medical beds at Calvary
IM Inpatient Activity: 250 medical beds across all subspecialties at TCH
IM Outpatient Clinics: Dependent on subspecialty unit (1-3) , ambulatory clinics are all private at Calvary but advanced trainees are invited
IM Specialty Interests / Special Units: Units at TCH which would definitely consider general medical trainees include geriatric medicine, clinical pharmacology, respiratory medicine although any rotation is negotiable.
The advanced trainee at Calvary can develop the position to fit their own interests- opportunities to learn endoscopy, to participate in visiting oncology and geriatric medicine services and to be part of an acute short stay unit.

Formal Training

Lectures: No formal lecture program for advanced trainees. An active basic training program exists with twice weekly lectures and weekly practice clinical exams.
Journal Club: As per Sub-Specialty units. Advanced trainees also participate in daily morning report/teaching sessions at each hospital
Grand Rounds: 1 week
Consult Rounds: Dependent on unit. Usually 2-3/week.
Specialty Rotations: As individually arranged by trainee
Research: Conducted by all units, most units have specialists with conjoint appointments at ANU medical school
Quality Improvement: Hospital wide practice improvement program (CHIP), clinical review committee and individual unit activities (all units must report involvement)

Trainee Responsibilities in IM

Coverage Roster: 1 in 7 on call TCH, approx 1 in 5 Calvary
Workload in Medicine Units: Average inpatient loads ~15 per registrar, additional ambulatory responsibilities. Calvary and Geriatric Medicine may be higher at times ~20 inpatients per registrar.
Teaching Responsibilities Med Student, Basic trainees
Research/presentations: Encouraged and arranged prospectively with supervisor, opportunities to collaborate with ANU (John Curtin, NCEPH)

Facilities: RMO’s lounge/sleeping quarters
Information Technology: Intra and internet available, electronic records and discharge summaries
