TrainingBecoming a General PhysicianPrinciples of Advanced Training in General MedicineGeneral PhilosophyAn optimal training programme in general medicine takes into account the necessity to equip trainees with sufficient breadth to cross the medical sub-specialties, some depth in selected sub-specialty areas and much depth in the principles of psychobiosocialdiagnosis, assessment and management. In addition to its traditional clinical content, training must also provide a substrate for self-determined continuing education, including the capacity to critically evaluate published material. Although diversity of geographical location and nature of practice is common amongst physicians, this diversity is probably greatest for general consultant physicians. Thus trainees must develop, or have the potential and opportunity to develop, those skills, including procedural skills, which might be required at various times during consultant practice, either by the conclusion of advanced training or subsequently. The following principles have been endorsed by the SAC in General Medicine:
