Those on the working group are very proud to deliver it, as for the first time we have clearly spelled out in detail the competencies we believe are essential for general physicians to practise in Australasia. We have attempted to highlight the special expertise of general physicians rather than concentrate on level of subspecialty knowledge. It is deliberately over inclusive and some material may move to other RACP documents e.g. some generic skills, basic training competencies. We believe that the three themes (scopes) of GIM outlined in the document have integrity with the future of general medical practice:
While more details (including structure and assessment, basic training, generic skills, dual training) have yet to be worked through at RACP level, we believe this is a sentinel document and should promote and inform debate at many levels. The next steps will be guided by your feedback and the RACP education strategy groups decisions.
