Physicians Week 2009

Mark these dates in your diary now. Physicians Week incorporates the annual RACP Congress which is the College's largest annual event. Physicians Week was adopted to reflect the diversity of the College and its multi-discipline meeting. This exciting meeting will include the College's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters, in partnership with the Specialty Societies and will provide professional development and networking opportunities to Fellows and Trainees.

IMSANZ Advanced Trainees are asked to consider forwarding abstracts for the IMSANZ Young Investigator Award. Abstracts close on Friday, 23 January 2009.

Eligibility to participate in acute undifferentiated medical take

The provision of the requisite numbers of physicians with general skills in managing patients with multiple problems, in order to meet the health care needs of the population in Australia and New Zealand, is of increasing concern.
A letter to members from the IMSANZ President and a detailed document with regard to eligibility to participate in acute undifferentiated medical take have been posted in the Members Area > What's New M (member login required).

Evidence-based Guidance for Common Clinical Conditions

This new section in the members-only Resouces will contain copies of the most current versions guidelines and clinical position papers issued into public domain from various expert clinical societies and related bodies. Those produced by Australasian agencies which may be more applicable to local settings are given priority.

Chronic Heart Failure guidelines released by the Heart Foundation and CSANZ

New guidelines for the prevention, detection and management of chronic heart failure (CHF) have been released by the Heart Foundation and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ).

The purpose of the guidelines is to promote evidence-based care for all patients with CHF. In particular, the guidelines aim to prevent CHF in those at risk and prevent progression and complications of CHF, relieve symptoms and improve quality of life and prolong survival of those with the condition.

The guidelines are endorsed by IMSANZ, and can be downloaded from the Heart Foundation website.

Rational Clinical Examination

Rational Clinical Examination was written for medical undergraduates and trainees in general medicine. It is a useful and succinct reference for all clinicians.

The information is presented systematically and is easy to follow. Lists of differential diagnosis emphasise the most common conditions and the rationale and clinical context behind physical signs is discussed. This book is written as a foundation to learning. How to Pass the RACP Exams

"How to Pass: The insider’s guide to the RACP examinations" is the brainchild of Zoë Raos and Ingrid Naden, who wrote the book in conjunction with the Clinical Education and Training Unit (CETU) at Auckland District Health Board. With a pass rate that varies from 50-70%, the RACP exams are notoriously hard. Ingrid Naden states “… we thought, let’s make it easier and help people to make the most of the time involved.” See full details...
